On May 3rd, 2004, Pantera was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, or bone cancer, of the left front leg. Osteosarcoma is a very aggressive and deadly type of cancer that has a tendency to spread quickly to the rest of the body, in particular, the lungs. Unfortunately the most widely prescribed treatment for this is to amputate the leg. It is well known that most dogs can adjust to the loss of a limb quite quickly.

In Pantera's case however, she has long suffered from hip dysplasia. The hip dysplasia has severely limited her use of her back legs and because of this she has long compensated by shifting her weight to her front legs.

In essence, amputation of a front leg would render her almost completely immobile. Along with amputation, chemotherapy would also be necessary for several months and as much as I love this dog, I cannot, in good conscious require her to endure the combination of hip dysplasia and its associated pain and limitations, amputation and recovery and chemotherapy at this age.

I love her too much to ask her to suffer through all that for me.

On May 25, 2004, at 3:10 pm I released her from her pain and let her go.

I'll be looking for her at the Rainbow Bridge.

Pantera and I - May 24, 2004

Pantera is a loyal and true friend of mine and has been with me through thick and thin. She has provided me with many long lasting memories - like the time she ate the eyeballs out of a 3 foot tall stuffed Bugs Bunny as it sat in a chair! And who could forget when she decided to "dig" a hole in my mattress! Always a character, I found it amazing that chewing ordinary sticks was not good enough for her, oh no, she had to chew on railroad ties!

Age has settled her down a bit now as well as a nagging knee injury. Though she doesn't run nearly as much, she can still display a surprising burst of speed when necessary.  She freely patrols the yard at night and also monitors the neighborhood for suspicious behavior.

Two days after being diagnosed with osteosarcoma (bone cancer) in her right leg, Pantera was back on duty guarding the yard. With all her ailments, she still was able to fend off a cottonmouth snake that attempted to enter our back porch.

Pantera is an exceptionally rare dog with unsurpassed intelligence and when healthy, very strong and determined. I am not sure exactly what her mix is but she is definitely part pitt bull and I suspect part greyhound but it's really anyone's guess.

This is the MuttPack™ with me of course as the 'always in control' Alpha male. Pantera is behind me (note the beady blue eyes to my right in the picture), Mudflap (English Mastiff pup) is trying to get seated, Tora (Terrier Mutt) is trying to sit in my lap and Shadow (Greyhound) is staring straight at the camera.
